We are not long back from Panama where we spent Christmas. Lots of wildlife as you would expect but perhaps the best encounter was with a Porcupine. Rothschild's Porcupine is a Panamanian endemic although not considered endangered. I guess this is because is not confined to primary forest. Nevertheless, it is nocturnal so even our guide was very pleased to see it during the day. It was sleeping on a branch in the mid-day sun. As we were able to wait, we did and it began to sniff (us). Slowly it awoke but even then didn't raise the head - too much bother. A cloud went over briefly giving better light for a photo. Its always satisfying to walk away and leave your subject where it was found and so that's what we did. |
