Waxwings, or Bohemian Waxwings to give them their Sunday name, are fantastic birds. They only visit us during the winter months and only in some years. This winter promises to be a bumper year for them. Unlike most wintering birds Waxwings often visit towns and cities and are fairly fearless in the company of human and vehicle traffic. As long as there are red berries they will stick around. As the berry crop dwindles they split into smaller group and begin on apples or other foodstuffs before returning across the North Sea to Scandinavia where they breed in the north, up to the tree line. As they seldom encounter them they have little fear of humans. Its difficult to take a different picture of one but this is a bit unusual and shows their agility. |
